Crystal’s Country Jam (Portland)

I truly enjoy the place. It’s kind of a dumpy looking place, near downtown, but definitely not downtown Portland.  It has atmosphere and the dancing is fun.  It’s a mixed crowd — men, women, and even a couple of straight folks there just to enjoy the dancing.  I do not know the name of the teacher but he was great the times I was there — extremely patient with my partner and I who were (are) two left-footed novices!  He will gladly go over the beginning steps as well as trying to teach some more adventurous moves to those past the beginner stage.  The building gets very warm in the summer — no air conditioning, but if you work up a sweat, you can step outdoors for a breath of fresh air.  It is a smoke-free place, so that makes it nice, too.  Crystal does a good job with the music — a little heavy on the Top 40 stuff for my tastes, and not enough waltzes, but nonetheless, it is a very fun place to go and dance the night away.  I only wish we lived closer so we could go more often.
