Backstreet
Saloon & Dancehall (Las Vegas)
The Backstreet is located
about a mile west of the south end of the Strip, very
close to one of the off-strip casinos, the Orleans.
The bar has a nice western
decor (and a bunch of video power machines, since
this is Vegas), and the dance floor is a decent size,
but not quite rectangular in shape. Unfortunately,
although Ive been there several times on weekends
at what would be prime dancing hours, the bar has
often been either near deserted or hosting a rodeo
drag show, with at best a few line dances between
numbers. *shrug* One of the bartenders
indicated that things may be better during the week,
or on Sundays with their popular beer bust.
(But I was there for the first hour of the beer bust
in July, 2001: 40-50 people in the bar, a DJ playing
decent music, and not a single person on the floor.
Go figure.)
Line dance lessons are
held on Wednesdays and Thursdays, taught by Dave,
with Wednesdays being for more intermediate/advanced
dances. Wednesday night lessons are from 7:30-9:00,
and Thursday night ones are from 7:00-9:00.
Couples lessons are taught by Tom on Fridays from
7:00-9:00. To my knowledge, lessons are free.
Tuesday night finds
square dancing with Neon Squares. Thursday has
a reputation as womens night. The fourth
Friday of the month is an NGRA (gay rodeo) fundraiser.
And Sunday afternoon from 4:00-7:00 is a popular beer
bust.

Badlands
Saloon (Las Vegas)
Badlands is located
in Commercial Center, a large strip mall about a mile
east of the Strip, off Sahara near Maryland.
Several other gay bars and the Apollo bathhouse are
also in Commercial Center.
The bar has a small
dance floor (maybe 12' x 15') at the back of the bar,
and there has been country music playing the couple
of times Ive been in there, but Ive yet
to see anyone make a move toward using the dance floor.
As with Backstreet, Vegas is an odd town, so what
might be prime dance time elsewhere may not be in
Neon City.

I visited Bad Dollys
once, in early May of 1999, but I missed the dance
night. I recall the dance floor as small (but
not postage stamps size), and the bar as being a womens
bar the rest of the week, which might mean a gender
imbalance on the nights they have country-western
music (or it might not).
