Day 6: Atlanta to Savannah to Jacksonville (Wednesday, 11/4)

On Wednesday, I left for Jacksonville, intending to go by way of Savannah.  Unfortunately, the highway turns south about 20 miles outside Savannah, and since I was really starting to get tired of driving, driving, driving, I decided to forego the rest of my “Let’s play General Sherman” bit, and headed south to Florida.

The Georgia coastline is by and large sheltered from the ocean by small islands, so I didn’t even get to see the Atlantic ocean except for a handful of teeny glimpses on the way south.  (I took a picture from the car, but there’s so little to see, I’m not going to bother putting it up here.)  About ten miles north of the Florida border, I stopped a bought a couple pounds of Georgia pecans as a gift for my mother.

Finding a place to stay in Jacksonville had been interesting.  For everyplace else on the way, I used the Damron Guide to find places, but they list absolutlely nothing under Accomodations for Jacksonville.  My travel agent managed to book me at a La Quinta Inn, which was just fine.  At least it was a bed.  Dinner that night was at a restaurant called Quincy’s Family Steakhouse — with yet another buffet!

After dinner, I headed out for a bar called the Boot Rack, which I had listings for as a country-western place, but wanted to check things out to be sure.  (Turns out to have an outdoor patio where they play country music and sometimes have some line dancing.)  The Boot Rack Saloon is also home to the JAX Bears, which I hadn’t realized were from Jacksonville until that evening (I was familiar with the logo, but had never attached “JAX” to “Jacksonville”).  I had planned on going to the Jacksonville Eagle, but didn’t make it there; I’m told I didn’t miss much.

Special howdy to Jay, whom I met at the Boot Rack.
