Day 3: Virginia Beach (Sunday, 11/1)

I managed to get up and wander down to the lobby just in time to catch Jerri and Mark as they were checking out of the hotel.  They share a house in Asheville, and I was to stay with them on Monday night, but didn’t yet have directions.  Whew!  Just in time.  (Jerri and Mark also share a last name, but aren’t related.  And they work together.  I’m sure it makes for some interesting assumptions on the parts of people they meet!)

Sunday at a hoedown is typically a slow down day as the various participants drift off to go back home, one by one.  Sunday is usually characterized by a “dance swap” (where people from different parts of the country teach favorite line dances from their areas).  I didn’t get to participate in the swap much because Bruce from Shoreline needed to get to the airport — the shuttle back to the hotel was late, so I drove him back to the hotel, and then took him to the airport in nearby Norfolk.

Later that afternoon, Jack (from Austin) and I went and found the local gay bookstore, where I managed to track down a copy of Sid Spencer’s last (posthumous) CD.  (Sid Spencer was a gay country-western recording artist who died in the summer of 1997.  He had four albums out from Amethyst Records.)  We then tooled into downtown Norfolk and found a bar called the Garage (which is where the Othersiders were originally based), and then back to the hotel, where we both crashed for further napping.

Sunday evening was another jaunt out to the Rainbow Cactus Company, where they were once again playing some country music in the back room while a drag show went on in the main bar.  There were still probably 20 of us hanging around at this point.  After a bit of this, it was back to the hotel for some heavily needed sleep.  See, on Monday I had to drive to Asheville — about 7 or 8 hours away!
