The man here is Jacob Krigstein, a man who engineered hundreds of superheroes for the American government from the 1950s onward. (He is a parody of Jack Kirby, who created massive numbers of comic book characters over the decades of his career.) Among the characters pictured here is one with a lightning motif; the yellow bolts coming diagonally over the shoulders on a blue background is clearly inspired by the costumes of Lightning Lad/Live Wire and Lightning Lass/Spark, with that connection made more clear by the fact that the writer on this issue is former Legion of Super-Heroes writer Tom Peyer. (Of note, though, is that the closest Jack Kirby ever came to working on the Legion was doing the Supermans Pal Jimmy Olsen comic book.) |
