Genesis #3

Genesis #3 cover

Date:

October 1997

Title:

“Event Horizon”

Plot:

After drawing straws to determine who will enter the Source, the gathered heroes travel to the Source Wall.  Once there, they confront Darkseid, who relates the origin and effects of the Godwave: the creation of both deities and heroes.  While most of the heroes battle Darkseid’s minions, the selected ones (including Saturn Girl and Spark) enter the Source, accompanied by Shazam and followed by the Spectre.  As Darkseid seeks a way to beat his adversary, the Source convulses and ejects the heroes who entered it, including Takion, who dies.  And then the Source Wall itself explodes.

Only scenes in which Legion of Super-Heroes characters appear are dealt with here.

1. The other Legionnaires and Shvaughn Erin were active during the Genesis series, even though some are never seen except in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #97.  Legion ally Inferno remained on Earth during the conflict, having split from the Legionnaires in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #96.

2. Honorary member, but no mention of his Legion membership is made in this series.

Analysis Notes

General Only pages 1, 7:2-3, 15, and 18-19 are dealt with here.
Given the reaction the Legionnaires had to Superboy’s behavior in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #94 and Superboy v3 #45, the lack of mention of his Legion membership status here is unfortunate.
None of the Legionnaires speak at all in this issue.
Cover Ultra Boy is near Darkseid’s thumb.  Saturn Girl and Cosmic Boy are below his middle finger.  Brainiac 5 is below his little finger.  Triad’s leg is below Big Barda.  (Note: neither Ultra Boy nor Triad appear in this issue.)  Most surprising, note the presence of Invisible Kid below Supergirl.  Invisible Kid is not even in the 20th century during this story, much less playing a role!
1 The characters seen here are (left-to-right, top-to-bottom): Max Mercury, Impulse, Aquaman, Tigorr, and unnamed Omega Man, Captain Marvel, Captain Marvel, Artemis, Supergirl, Martian Manhunter, Warrior, Queen Hippolyta, Flash, Green Lantern, Donna Troy, Steel, Superman, Takion, Saturn Girl, Cosmic Boy, Prysm, Atom, and Kaliber.
It is impossible to tell from this page just who drew what sort of straw.  Saturn Girl’s expression indicates that either she or Cosmic Boy drew a short one.
7:2 Cosmic Boy is on the platform, next to Starman.
The bands seen on the characters’ right arms (many of them miscolored) are miniature Mother Boxes.
7:3 The character seen between Flash and Martian Manhunter must be Spark.
15 The characters seen here are (left-to-right, top-to-bottom): Aquaman, Superman, Supergirl, Orion, Hero, Sparx, Kalibak, Superboy, Captain Marvel, Artemis, Max Mercury, Starman, Granny Goodness, Impulse, Jesse Quick, Brainiac 5 (miscolored), Cosmic Boy, Big Barda, Mister Miracle, an unnamed (and uninked!) Omega Man, and Aura.
18:1 The characters seen here are (left-to-right, top-to-bottom): Kaliber, Warrior, Arzaz, Spark, Martian Manhunter, Saturn Girl (dead center), Donna Troy, Flash, Captain Marvel, Steel, and Atom.
18:2 The characters seen here are (left-to-right, top-to-bottom): Arzaz, Queen Hippolyta, Metron, Saturn Girl, Spark (hitting the wall), Kaliber Warrior, Captain Marvel, Steel, Flash, Martian Manhunter, and Donna Troy.
The Source is presumably damping the impact for the ejected heroes; otherwise ones like Spark and Saturn Girl would be seriously injured by such an impact.
19:2 The characters seen here are (left-to-right): Saturn Girl, Kaliber, Warrior, Donna Troy, Prysm, Queen Hippolyta, Tigorr, Martian Manhunter, Steel, Flash, Arzaz, Metron, Captain Marvel, Shazam, and Takion.
19:6 It appears that Cosmic Boy and Saturn Girl haven’t completely gotten past her mentally induced “love.”  Maybe they are just holding each other tight as friends.
Observe the mirrored pose between Cosmic Boy/Saturn Girl and Mr. Miracle/Big Barda.
That is a miscolored Brainiac 5 behind Cosmic Boy.  The character behind Saturn Girl is probably Hero.  Lightray is next to Big Barda, with an unnamed Omega Man behind him, and Darkstar is in the lower left corner.
