Genesis #2 cover

Date:

October 1997

Title:

“Edge of Destruction”
(Cover Title: “The Edge of Destruction!”)

Plot:

While the heroes gathered on the moon react to the alien armada, so do the New Gods on Apokolips react to the absence of Darkseid and his minions.  And on Earth, various heroes also react to loss of faith being felt worldwide.  A global attack by Darkseid’s minions seems to correspond with the alien armada, which turns out to be an alliance of alien races who have tracked the effects of the Godwave to Earth.  Staving off conflict, Highfather appears to all concerned and explains the cause of the conflict.  Straws are drawn to select the volunteers who will enter the Source to stop the Godwave contraction.

Only scenes in which Legion of Super-Heroes characters appear are dealt with here.

1. The other Legionnaires and Shvaughn Erin were active during the Genesis series, even though some are never seen except in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #97.  Legion ally Inferno remained on Earth during the conflict, having split from the Legionnaires in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #96.

2. Honorary member, but no mention of his Legion membership is made in this series.

Analysis Notes

General Only pages 18:1-2 and 20 are dealt with here.
18:1 Despite the indications that this fight against Mantis occurs in the present - and in Happy Harbor, to boot - it actually occurs during Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #97.  Cosmic Boy’s comment is likewise inaccurate.
18:2 Ultra Boy’s comment should also be ignored.
18:1-2 Despite superficial similarities to her lightning, Spark’s power signature must be that of her new gravity powers.
There is no mention of Ultra Boy’s multiple powers from Genesis #1, lending support to him actually being unaffected and Spark’s power change being responsible for his apparent power surge.
20:1 Note the absence of Ferro, Gates, Triad, Shvaughn Erin, and Koko; they should be present, too, since they appear in Legion of Super-Heroes v4 #97.
21:1, 21:3, 22:1 The Legionnaires cannot be indiviudally identified here, so these do not count as panel appearances for them.
22:2 While that appears to be Apparition is standing behind Ray and Green Lantern, it is actually Donna Troy.  All the Legionnaires would be off to the far left.
